Tori Layne (Bates) Smith is the seventh of Gil and Kelly Bates' nineteen children. She is married to Bobby Smith, and they have three children, Kade, Kolter, and Charlotte, and are currently expecting their fourth child.

Early Life

Tori Layne Bates was born on December 20, 1995, to Gil Bates and Kelly Jo Callaham. She was the couple's seventh child, and they went on to have twelve more children after her.

Tori was homeschooled growing up. She and her siblings were raised as active participants of Bill Gothard's Institute in Basic Life Principles.

At some point as a child Tori began taking violin lessons.[1]

She is said to have always had a bubbly personality.


Tori has a part-time job, but it is unknown what she is doing.[1]


Tori studied education at Crown College of the Bible. On May 7, 2018, she graduated magna cumme laude with her Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education.[2]

Television Career

Tori appeared on the TLC show 19 Kids and Counting many times as a teenager. In 2012, TLC aired one season of the show United Bates of America, which focused on Tori's family. In 2015, UpTV began airing a similar show, Bringing Up Bates, which is currently in its sixth season. Tori is regularly featured in both shows.

On February 9, 2017, Tori announced that she was officially courting Bobby Smith.[3] They met through a mutual friend in 2015, and officially began courting in November of 2016.[4]

On September 21, 2017, Tori and Bobby announced that they were engaged. He proposed to her at Wiseman's View, a scenic overlook in North Carolina.[4]

On December 16th 2017, Tori and Bobby got married at Calvary Baptist Church in Knoxville Tennessee.[5] Tori's matron of honor was her sister Erin Paine and her maid of honor was her sister Carlin Bates.[6] Her bridesmaids included her sisters Michaela Keilen, Alyssa Webster, and Josie and Katie Bates, her sister-in-law Whitney Bates, and her friends Devonna Killin, Kaillyn Stewart, and Abby Paine. Her brothers Zach, Lawson, and Trace Bates were among the groomsmen. The wedding was officiated by Tori's father, Gil Bates. Her brother Lawson Bates wrote a song titled "One Plus One" for the wedding. Her dress was designed by Renee Miller of Renee Bridal.[5]

The couple spent two days in Gatlinburg, TN, before flying out to California for their honeymoon.[7]

On May 10, 2018, Tori and Bobby announced that they were expecting their first child, who is due in November of 2018.[8]

On June 21, 2018, Tori and Bobby announced that they were having a son, Robert Ellis Smith IV, who would be called Kade.[9]

At 7:45am on November 9, 2018, Tori gave birth to her first child, Robert "Kade" Ellis Smith IV at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN. He weighed 6 lb and 1 oz and was 18 inches long.[10]

On October 18, 2019, Tori and Bobby announced that they were expecting their second child, a son, due in April of 2020.[11]

At 4:17pm on March 25, 2020, Tori gave birth to her second son, Kolter Gray Smith. He weighed 6 lb and 6 oz.[12]

On January 19, 2021, Tori and Bobby announced they were expecting their third child, a daughter named Charlotte Raine, due in June 2021.[13]

On June 24, 2021, Tori gave birth to Charlotte Raine Smith. She weighed 5lbs 11oz and was 19in long.[14]

On May 8, 2022 (Mother's Day), Tori and Bobby announced they were expecting their fourth child, a daughter, due in August 2022.[15]
